Editorial: It’s the size of the pie that should be the concern

For years now residents, communities, and different groups within the shire community have complained about our rates and once again, farmers have stood up and given the Northern Grampians Shire Council (NGSC) a pounding at its last meeting to adopt the 2021/22 budget. Every year it is the same process. Council put out the draft budget and people complain about their rising rates, in particular, to each other, with some submitting suggestions in response, but they are all along the same lines. We all argue about the breakup of the ‘pie’, about the rates that support such a large amount of the ‘budget pie’ and how much their group contributes to the ‘pie’.
